Meerut: A building collapse in the crowded Zakir Colony of Meerut claimed the lives of three individuals, including a minor, on Saturday evening. Additionally, three people remain missing. Rescue teams have so far managed to save five minors, two women, and one man, despite challenging weather conditions hampering the ongoing search efforts.
District Magistrate Deepak Meena provided an update on the situation, stating, “There were 14 individuals in the building when it collapsed. Three managed to escape, leaving 11 inside. Out of these, eight have been rescued while three are still unaccounted for. Sadly, three lives have been lost.”
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vipin Tada reported that all rescued individuals were immediately transported to the district hospital. Many sustained significant injuries, with one woman currently in critical condition. “Tragically, a 1.5-year-old girl named Shimra was among those who died in the incident,” he added.
Additional Director General of Police, Meerut Zone, DK Thakur, noted that authorities received information about the collapse around 5 p.m. Emergency teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were swiftly dispatched to the scene and are actively engaged in the rescue operation.
Preliminary investigations by district authorities suggest that continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days may have contributed to the building’s collapse.
