Two Tribal Women Lynched in Birbhum on Suspicion of Witchcraft; 15 Arrested

In a incident in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, two middle-aged tribal women were brutally lynched by their neighbors on suspicion of practicing witchcraft. Police reported on Saturday that the bodies of the two women were found near a canal in the Harisara village, under the jurisdiction of the Mayureswar Police Station. The incident occurred on Friday night, and 15 people have been arrested in connection with the case.

The deceased women have been identified as Lodgi Kisku and Dali Soren. Their family members alleged that they were dragged out of their homes at night, tied up with ropes, and beaten to death with sticks. Lodgi Kisku’s daughter, Rani Kisku, stated, “My cousins and other villagers dragged my mother out of the house. My two brothers were not at home, so we couldn’t save her.”

A senior police officer mentioned that initial investigations point to witchcraft suspicion as the motive behind the murders. However, other possibilities are also being considered. Upon receiving information about the incident, a large police force was deployed to the village, and 15 people were arrested for their alleged involvement.

The police have also obtained a video clip showing the alleged mob beating, which is currently being analyzed as part of the investigation. The 15 arrested individuals were later presented before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Rampurhat.
