Assam Government Considers Withdrawal of 81,000 Minor Cases to Ease Judicial Burden

The Assam Cabinet has decided to amend the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for withdrawing minor cases pending in subordinate courts. This move aims to expedite the resolution of serious crimes and reduce overcrowding in jails by facilitating the release of undertrial prisoners. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced after Friday’s cabinet meeting that this initiative could see the withdrawal of up to 81,000 minor cases by March 2024.

In addition to this, the Cabinet approved a proposal from Hidalts Systems Private Limited to establish centers of excellence in space, defense, automotive, and electric vehicle industries, among other sectors. The company will invest ₹200 crore, with the state government contributing ₹40 crore to the project. This initiative will also train 3,000 engineering graduates in robotics, space, defense, and artificial intelligence (AI) fields.

The Cabinet also granted approval for the purchase of 100 megawatts of wind-solar hybrid power from the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). Furthermore, a special recruitment drive will be launched to regularize 4,669 additional contractual teachers. The Cabinet also sanctioned the inclusion of 126,000 beneficiaries under the ‘Orunodoi’ scheme across 126 legislative constituencies. Additionally, starting September 19, 17 lakh new ration cards will be issued to people.
