The IP University community is reeling from the tragic suicide of a student, Gautam Kumar, who jumped from the 7th floor of his hostel in Delhi’s Dwarka on Sunday, September 17th. The incident reportedly occurred after Kumar was expelled from the Shivalik Boys Hostel for allegedly participating in a birthday celebration where alcohol was consumed.
According to reports, Kumar, a resident of Bihar’s Hajipur district, was among six students who received expulsion orders from the hostel warden on Saturday. The warden alleged that the students had consumed alcohol in their room on the night of September 13th and 14th. The expelled students were given until 2 pm on Sunday to vacate their rooms.
Fellow students claim that Kumar was not involved in drinking or smoking and was simply called into the room by other students for birthday cake. When the warden entered the room, he allegedly caught the students celebrating and issued the expulsion orders. Despite Kumar’s pleas that he was innocent and couldn’t afford to live outside the hostel, his request was reportedly ignored.
Following Kumar’s tragic death, students at the hostel gathered in large numbers outside, staging a massive protest against the hostel warden and IP University administration. They demanded immediate and stringent action against those responsible for pushing Kumar to take his own life. Senior police officials are at the scene attempting to de-escalate the situation.
The incident has sparked outrage and grief within the IP University community. While the exact circumstances surrounding the events leading to Kumar’s death are still under investigation, the tragic loss highlights the vulnerability of students facing disciplinary action and the need for greater support systems.
The IP University administration is yet to release an official statement on the matter. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of inadequate support for students facing difficult circumstances, and it underscores the importance of establishing comprehensive mental health resources within educational institutions.
