Supreme Court Criticizes High Court Judge Over “Pakistan” and “Undergarment” Remarks

Videos of Justice Srishananda have gone viral on social media.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today requested a report from the Karnataka High Court following controversial remarks made by Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda during a recent court hearing. While addressing a landlord-tenant dispute, Justice Srishananda referred to a Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru as “Pakistan” and made a misogynistic comment involving a woman lawyer.

A five-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices S Khanna, B R Gavai, S Kant, and H Roy, emphasized the need for establishing clear guidelines for constitutional court judges regarding their remarks during court proceedings. The Supreme Court highlighted the role of social media in amplifying courtroom proceedings and stressed the importance of ensuring judicial commentary adheres to the decorum expected from the judiciary.

“Attention has been drawn to media reports concerning the comments made by Justice… of Karnataka High Court during court proceedings. We request the Karnataka High Court to submit a report after seeking instructions from the Chief Justice of the high court,” Chief Justice Chandrachud stated. “We may lay down some basic guidelines.”

Chief Justice Chandrachud ordered the report to be filed and submitted within two days, with the next hearing scheduled for Wednesday of next week.

Videos of Justice Srishananda have been widely circulated on social media platforms. In one video, he refers to a Muslim-dominated locality in Bengaluru as “Pakistan.” In another clip, Justice Srishananda is seen making objectionable comments towards a woman lawyer. He suggested that the lawyer seemed to know so much about the opposition party that she might even be able to reveal the color of their undergarments.
