Kanpur: Another major accident was narrowly avoided on Sunday morning after an LPG cylinder was found placed on the railway tracks near Prempur Station in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The cylinder was spotted by the loco pilot of a goods train traveling from Kanpur to Prayagraj, who quickly applied the emergency brakes, preventing a potential disaster.
This is the fourth such incident in September, marking a concerning pattern of sabotage attempts aimed at derailing trains. Earlier on September 8, the Kalindi Express, en route from Prayagraj to Bhiwani, collided with an LPG cylinder placed on the tracks in the same region. Fortunately, no severe damage occurred, though the train came to an abrupt halt. Along with the cylinder, suspicious items like a petrol bottle and matchboxes were also found.
Indian Railways reported that since August, there have been 18 attempts nationwide to derail trains, with objects such as LPG cylinders, bicycles, iron rods, and cement blocks placed on tracks. Between June 2023 and now, a total of 24 such incidents have been recorded. This recent event in Kanpur adds to the growing concerns about rail safety.
Authorities have ramped up security measures, and investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for these repeated sabotage attempts.
