A high-level probe committee appointed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) and its contractor Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as responsible for the death of Vimal Anil Gaikwad, a 45-year-old woman who tragically fell into a stormwater drain during heavy rains in Andheri.
The incident occurred on September 25, and the BMC’s investigation report, released on Monday, indicated that MMRCL and L&T have been accountable for the site in the SEEPZ area of Andheri since 2015. Prior to the tragedy, the BMC had notified L&T of deficiencies at the incident site and sent letters to MMRCL on August 24 and 29, 2024, urging for corrective actions during the defect liability period.
Ashwini Bhide, the managing director of MMRCL, stated, “Our team will check all the facts and respond suitably.” The report also criticized BMC officials for not taking adequate steps to address the issue, especially considering that a red alert for heavy rainfall had been issued.
The probe panel, led by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Devidas Kshirsagar, included members such as Mumbai Fire Brigade Chief Ravindra Ambulgekar and Chief Engineer Avinash Tambewagh. They emphasized the need for increased vigilance from civic staff in the area.
This incident has raised concerns about safety measures during inclement weather and the responsibility of both the civic body and contractors in ensuring public safety.
