PROTESTS ESCALATE OVER SANJAULI MOSQUE IN SHIMLA; WAQF BOARD TAKES CONTROL

Shimla, September 6, 2024:

Tensions have surged in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, over the alleged illegal construction of a mosque in Sanjauli. In response to widespread protests, the Waqf Board has intervened and taken control of the mosque, acknowledging that its construction violated regulations.

Waqf Board’s Actions

Following the intense demonstrations, which saw participation from BJP members, Hindu organizations, and local residents, the Waqf Board acted decisively. The state officer for Shimla, Qutubuddin, reported that the mosque’s floors were constructed without proper authorization. Additionally, the Imam assigned to the mosque has been removed, and the Board has implemented a ban on any outsiders staying at the mosque.

Protest Background

The controversy intensified after a heated debate in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday. Congress Minister Anirudh Singh called for an investigation into the mosque’s construction, asserting that any illegal structures should be addressed according to the law. “Illegal is illegal, whether it’s a temple or a mosque,” Singh stated, questioning the long-standing neglect of the issue.

The protests on Thursday saw large gatherings of Hindu groups in Shimla, demanding the mosque’s demolition. The demonstrators argue that the mosque was built unlawfully and should be removed.

Additional Mosque Controversy

In addition to the Sanjauli mosque row, another mosque in Shimla’s Kasumpti area has come under scrutiny. Ward Councillor Rachna Sharma alleged that unauthorized repair work had been conducted on the mosque, which is reportedly operating without the necessary approvals from the Waqf Council and Shimla Municipal Corporation.

Sharma highlighted that the mosque’s presence is causing difficulties for local residents, as there are no families from the Muslim community in the vicinity. The local Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) has promised that appropriate action will be taken after reviewing all relevant documents.
