Kolkata – The recent arrest of Afsar Ali Khan, alongside former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh, has sparked significant discussion on the RG Kar campus. The focus is now on the bouncers who were frequently seen with Ghosh, and the ongoing CBI investigation into Ghosh’s network.
According to junior doctors at RG Kar, Khan, who was known for his political connections, would frequently flaunt his power by driving expensive SUVs and motorcycles. He was reported to run an illegal bike parking operation in the hospital basement and manage a cafe near the administrative block. His close association with Ghosh meant that many staff members and students felt intimidated and were unable to challenge his activities.
The CBI’s investigation into these activities was underscored in a court appeal for Khan’s custody, with the agency detailing his involvement in these illegal operations.
In the Belgachhia Model Bustee, where Khan resides, locals were hesitant to speak negatively about him. They described him as a “big man,” reflecting his influence and the fear of retaliation. Khan’s brother, Imran Ali Khan, revealed that Afsar did not need the job at RG Kar for financial reasons but used it to manage the illegal activities and oversee various personal tasks for Ghosh.
Imran, who is a long-time member of the Trinamool Congress and a former builder, explained that Afsar had transitioned to the security guard role due to the downturn in the construction business caused by the Covid pandemic. He initially secured a contract for the hospital cafe, which was later canceled but subsequently reinstated under a different name. Khan also took over the bike parking operations.
The controversy surrounding Khan intensified when a video surfaced in September 2023, showing him aggressively confronting Manas Bandyopadhyay, the current principal of RG Kar. Imran Khan has alleged that Afsar is being framed in the financial fraud case to divert attention from other issues, including serious allegations of rape and murder.
The ongoing scrutiny highlights the deep-seated issues within the hospital administration and the broader implications of political influence and corruption in public institutions.
