Abrosexuality, a relatively new and lesser-known sexual identity, refers to a kind of sexual fluidity. This term describes the experience of fluctuating levels of sexual or romantic attraction over time.
Emma Flint, a 30-year-old from the UK, recently shared her journey of self-discovery and her decision to come out as abrosexual. Flint discovered the term through Zoe Stoller, a US-based educator and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. In an interview with Metro, Flint described the moment as an epiphany, saying, “It was like a lightbulb went off when I read their post. I finally felt seen.”
Abrosexuality is characterized by its fluid nature, meaning that a person’s sexuality can shift and change. According to Stoller, who spoke to Buzzfeed, an abrosexual person might identify with different sexuality labels at various times. For example, one day they might feel pansexual, while on another day, they might identify as lesbian. Some might exclusively use the term “abrosexual.” This concept parallels the gender identity label of “genderfluid.”
Understanding Abrosexuality
Abrosexuality encompasses the experience of fluctuating sexual or romantic attraction. It describes individuals whose sexual orientation can change over time. For instance, an abrosexual person may feel a strong attraction to men at one period, only to experience a shift or decrease in attraction later, potentially finding themselves attracted to no one for a while.
These fluctuations can occur in the form of daily changes, shifts over weeks or years, or varying levels of intensity in attraction. While abrosexuality can be experienced by individuals of any age, it seems particularly resonant with younger generations, such as Gen Z, due to growing awareness and acceptance of diverse sexual identities.
According to WebMD, “Abrosexual” is one of many terms used to describe different sexual orientations and falls under the multi-sexuality umbrella, which includes those romantically or sexually attracted to more than one gender.
Examples of Abrosexuality
Here are some ways abrosexuality might manifest:
- Daily Fluctuations: Attraction might vary from men one day to women the next.
- Shifting Attractions: An individual might initially feel drawn to all genders but later focus on one specific gender.
- Periods of Low Attraction: There may be times with little to no sexual attraction, followed by periods of attraction to various genders.
- Evolution of Attraction: A person might identify as heterosexual but later develop an attraction to people of the same gender.
Challenges Faced by Abrosexual Individuals
Abrosexual people might face unique challenges in relationships due to the fluid nature of their attractions. Some may worry that changes in their sexual attraction could impact long-term relationships. For example, initial attraction to a partner’s gender might diminish over time.
Despite these challenges, abrosexual individuals can still have healthy, fulfilling relationships. Open communication, mutual understanding, and adaptability are key to navigating and sustaining successful partnerships.
