As the deadline for Haryana’s October 5 Assembly elections approaches, discussions between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress regarding a potential alliance continue. Raghav Chadha, a prominent AAP leader, emphasized that both parties are hopeful about forming a coalition, though they face ongoing negotiations over seat-sharing.
The last date to file nominations is September 12, and candidates can withdraw their papers until then. Chadha noted, “Both parties have a strong desire and hope for an alliance. We aim to finalize our decision by September 12. If we cannot reach a mutually beneficial arrangement, we may opt out.”
Chadha expressed optimism about the talks, which have reportedly been constructive. AAP is seeking to contest 10 of Haryana’s 90 Assembly seats, while Congress is reluctant to offer more than seven seats due to concerns over AAP’s past performance in elections.
“We’re having positive discussions. I’m hopeful that we’ll reach a favorable resolution for Haryana, the nation, and democracy. However, I can’t disclose specific figures at this time,” Chadha said.
Deepak Babaria, who oversees Congress’s Haryana operations, echoed this sentiment, indicating that a resolution is expected soon. He mentioned, “I’ve had several meetings with Chadha recently. We’re exchanging information and hope to finalize the details within the next couple of days. If a win-win situation arises, we’ll proceed with the coalition, which might involve changes to some candidates.”
The potential alliance between AAP and Congress is part of the broader INDIA bloc, which previously united opposition parties to challenge the BJP. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has encouraged the continuation of this alliance to counter BJP’s dominance in Haryana, a state where BJP has won consecutively in 2014 and 2019.
In the Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s performance in Haryana was less robust, securing only five out of ten seats, while Congress and AAP split the remaining seats, preventing BJP from a complete sweep.
Despite Chadha’s positive outlook, there is some internal dissent within AAP regarding the alliance. Delhi MLA Somnath Bharti has suggested that AAP should contest all 90 seats independently, recalling the disappointing outcome of the previous alliance with Congress during the Lok Sabha elections.
Chadha declined to comment on any internal disputes or specific allegations, maintaining that discussions are ongoing. “I will not address any individual or seat-related controversies. We hope to provide good news soon,” he said.
AAP is reportedly insisting on securing at least one seat in Kurukshetra, with a backup plan in place if the alliance doesn’t materialize. Congress has already announced 32 candidates for the elections, including notable figures such as Olympian Vinesh Phogat and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
The final votes will be counted on October 8.
