In a tragic incident, Limlal Mate, a retired soldier, was found dead on Monday, two days after being kidnapped by suspected militants in Manipur. The discovery of his body between the Imphal West and Kangpokpi districts followed an intensive search operation.
This incident comes amidst escalating violence in Manipur, where six people were recently killed in Jiribam district, a region that had remained largely untouched by the ethnic clashes that have gripped the state for over a year. The conflict, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has created deep divisions along ethnic lines.
According to the victim’s son, Thangminlun Mate, his father had gone to Shantipur to buy household items when he was abducted. He filed an FIR at the Gamnom Saparmeina Police Station, later learning through social media that his father had been killed in the Phumlou area.
Thangminlun demanded justice and strict action against the culprits, while protests erupted across the state, with thousands of students gathering outside the Manipur secretariat and Raj Bhavan. The protesters demanded accountability for recent drone and missile attacks and urged the government to safeguard Manipur’s territorial integrity.
In a separate development, the state government, in a meeting with the Governor, called for control of the “Home Ministry-run Unified Command,” which coordinates security operations in the state, to be handed over to local authorities.
