The ongoing RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case has sparked intense speculation about a potential shift in leadership within the BJP’s West Bengal unit. Purulia MP Jyotirmoy Mahato has become a central figure in this discourse, given his proactive engagement with the case.
Mahato has been actively writing letters to various high-profile institutions, including the Chief Justice of India, the Central Bureau of Investigation, and the Enforcement Directorate. His correspondence has included urgent requests for expedited proceedings and investigations into alleged corruption and misuse related to RG Kar Medical College. His actions have not gone unnoticed, and some insiders suggest that he may be in line to replace Sukanta Majumdar as the BJP’s state president.
This speculation has gained traction due to the absence of similar communications from Majumdar and the increasing visibility of Mahato’s role in addressing the RG Kar case. There is a belief among some BJP circles that a faction within the state unit, criticized for its handling of recent electoral setbacks, might be positioning Mahato as a more effective leader.
However, not everyone is convinced. Critics within the party question Mahato’s experience and ability to connect with the masses, pointing to a significant drop in his electoral margin as evidence of his limited appeal. Despite these concerns, Mahato has denied any ambitions for the state president role, attributing his letters to his responsibilities as an MP. He maintains that while he is committed to his role within the party, he does not see himself as the next state president.
As the BJP grapples with both the RG Kar case and its internal dynamics, the speculation surrounding Mahato’s future underscores the ongoing challenges the party faces in West Bengal.
