The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its call for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation amid the ongoing Supreme Court hearings related to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case. The party’s spokesperson, Gaurav Bhatia, has called for Banerjee’s immediate arrest and for her to undergo a polygraph test to verify her statements.
During a press briefing at the BJP headquarters, Bhatia criticized Banerjee for allegedly failing to uphold democratic values and for purportedly being involved in covering up the case. He claimed that the Supreme Court had raised questions about Banerjee’s continued role as Chief Minister during the hearings.
Bhatia argued that for the sake of a fair investigation, Banerjee should step down from her position. He also accused her of obstructing justice by supposedly protecting those involved in the case and destroying evidence. According to Bhatia, the Supreme Court hearing, which lasted about two hours, was a significant embarrassment for Indian democracy.
The BJP has demanded that Banerjee be subjected to a polygraph test to verify her claims and has called for the dismissal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. They also want the release of call records between Banerjee, Goyal, and Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College.
Bhatia further criticized the handling of the case, including the delay in filing the FIR, the expedited post-mortem, and the limited CCTV footage provided. He expressed dissatisfaction with how the case has been managed and suggested that internal dissent within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) could emerge due to the controversy.
The BJP’s demands reflect growing frustration and highlight the political tensions surrounding the case. The party’s stance indicates potential for further unrest within the TMC and dissatisfaction among the people of West Bengal.
