Second Attempt to Derail Train in Two Days: Cement Blocks Found on Tracks in Ajmer

An attempt to derail a goods train in Rajasthan’s Ajmer district was reported on September 8, 2024. Unidentified miscreants placed two cement blocks, each weighing around 70 kg, on the tracks of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. Despite the train hitting the blocks, it continued its journey without significant damage.

The incident occurred between the Saradhna and Bangad stations on the Phulera-Ahmedabad stretch. North Western Railway officials confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway.

This incident follows a similar attempt to derail the Bhiwani-Prayagraj Kalindi Express in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, which occurred just a day earlier. In that case, an LPG cylinder, along with a bottle of petrol and matchboxes, was placed on the tracks. The quick action of the loco pilot prevented a major disaster as the train came to a screeching halt after hitting the cylinder.

Kanpur Incident Details

The Kalindi Express was traveling at high speed when it encountered the LPG cylinder on the tracks. The loco pilot applied emergency brakes, causing the train to hit the cylinder and knock it off the tracks. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Harish Chander, confirmed the recovery of 4-5 grams of explosive powder, a bottle of petrol, matchboxes, and the LPG cylinder from the site.

Six individuals, including two local history sheeters, have been detained in connection with the Kanpur incident. The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have been involved in the investigation.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are investigating if there is any connection between these incidents and the recent derailment of the Sabarmati Express near Govindpuri station in Kanpur. On August 17, 2024, twenty coaches of the Ahmedabad-bound Sabarmati Express derailed after hitting an “object placed on the track.”

The Rajasthan government has also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the Ajmer incident, considering possible terrorist angles and coordinating with other state agencies.

Current Status

Train operations on the affected track have resumed, and the police continue their investigation to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of rail passengers.
