The Congress party convened a crucial meeting on Monday to strategize for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections, following a disappointing performance in Haryana earlier this month. The discussions focused on seat-sharing arrangements with allies in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, alongside key electoral strategies to avoid past mistakes.
Key Attendees and Objectives
The meeting, chaired by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence in New Delhi, saw participation from prominent figures including former party chief Rahul Gandhi, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole, and Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar. A primary agenda item was to solidify the party’s position on contested seat allocations, especially as tensions arise with Shiv Sena (UBT) over certain strongholds.
According to party functionaries, Congress aims to contest at least 110 seats, while the Sena (UBT) is eyeing candidates in traditionally Congress-dominated areas, complicating negotiations.
Challenges Ahead
The party is also navigating potential electoral hurdles stemming from the Maratha quota agitation led by activist Manoj Jarange-Patil. This movement could impact voter sentiments and dilute the vote share, necessitating careful strategizing and outreach efforts.
One functionary noted, “The Congress leadership has been instructed to actively engage with various committees to ensure a clear stance on fighting for at least 110 seats.” The need for unity among MVA partners is underscored by concerns about overlapping interests and potential vote dilution.
Lessons from Haryana
Reflecting on the Haryana elections, where Congress fell short of expectations—winning only 37 of 90 seats despite predictions of a landslide victory—party leaders emphasized the importance of an effective narrative. The Haryana campaign’s focus on seven guarantees failed to resonate, a misstep Congress hopes to rectify in Maharashtra.
A functionary stated, “We need a robust plan for maximum outreach of a joint declaration among the MVA partners to ensure our message resonates with voters.”
Electoral Integrity
In light of past concerns over electronic voting machines (EVMs), Congress leaders were instructed to remain vigilant and document any discrepancies during the polling process. Allegations regarding EVM irregularities played a significant role in Congress’s post-election narrative in Haryana, further emphasizing the need for oversight in the upcoming elections.
Moving Forward
After the meeting, Patole reassured the media about the coalition’s strength, stating, “We will move forward with our alliance, the Maha Vikas Aghadi. We will counter the tactics employed by the Bharatiya Janata Party and aim to form a government in Maharashtra.”
With elections for the 288-member assembly expected next month, the Congress party is keenly aware of the challenges and stakes involved. As the political landscape evolves, the coalition’s ability to present a united front will be crucial in securing electoral success against the backdrop of recent setbacks.
