In a heated exchange of political rhetoric, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a sharp critique of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s decision to propose Atishi as his successor. BJP leaders have accused Kejriwal of choosing a “puppet” to maintain control amid internal power struggles within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
BJP’s Accusations
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari argued that Kejriwal’s move to install Atishi as the new Chief Minister reflects his lack of confidence in his party and an attempt to undermine potential rivals within AAP. Bhandari contended that this decision would not resonate well with Delhi voters, who are disillusioned by the party’s internal conflicts.
He also criticized Atishi’s family for allegedly attempting to prevent the execution of Afzal Guru, a claim that was made to underline his position that AAP supports controversial figures. Bhandari suggested that this choice is indicative of AAP’s tendency to use women as ‘puppets’ for political gain.
Harish Khurana’s Remarks
BJP leader Harish Khurana condemned Atishi’s nomination, referring to her as a “dummy CM” and expressing skepticism about any significant change under her leadership. Khurana accused the AAP of failing to address corruption and challenged Atishi to recommend early elections to prove her commitment to reform.
Atishi’s Role and Background
Atishi, who currently manages 14 portfolios including finance, education, and revenue, has been a key figure in the Delhi government, notably stepping up during Kejriwal’s recent imprisonment. If confirmed, she will become the third woman to serve as Delhi’s Chief Minister, following Congress’ Sheila Dikshit and BJP’s Sushma Swaraj.
Next Steps
Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to meet Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena at 4:30 PM to formally resign, paving the way for Atishi’s appointment. This transition marks a significant moment in Delhi’s political landscape, as the BJP and AAP continue to clash over the future direction of the city’s governance.
The political atmosphere remains charged as Delhi prepares for this shift in leadership, with both parties mobilizing their supporters and addressing the public’s concerns about governance and corruption.
