BJP Targets Omar Abdullah, Calls His Comments on Afzal Guru Anti-National

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sharply criticized Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC), for his recent remarks about Afzal Guru. Abdullah, in a recent interview, condemned the execution of Afzal Guru, who was convicted for the 2001 Parliament attack, calling it a wrong decision. He stated that the execution served no purpose and implied that if he had been in charge, he would not have approved it.

BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi described Abdullah’s comments as a clear indication of his “nefarious, vile, separatist, and anti-national intentions.” Trivedi questioned Congress about the credibility of the investigation agencies during their tenure and whether the Supreme Court’s verdict was incorrect. He reminded that the Supreme Court had labeled Afzal Guru’s crimes as “rarest of rare,” justifying the death penalty.

Trivedi also criticized the Congress for its stated intent to restore Article 370, citing former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah’s 2020 claim of restoring it with China’s help. He accused Congress of hiding its true intentions and failing to take responsibility, pointing out that Rahul Gandhi had once supported those chanting anti-national slogans like “Afzal, we are ashamed, your killers are alive.”

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad denounced Abdullah’s remarks as irresponsible and anti-national. He emphasized that Afzal Guru was given the death penalty after thorough legal scrutiny and review, highlighting the gravity of his involvement in terrorism. Prasad accused Abdullah of endorsing terrorism for electoral gain and questioned whether such statements aimed to undermine the nation.

Another BJP MP, Manoj Tiwari, asserted that Abdullah’s comments directly challenge the Supreme Court’s decision. He recalled that Afzal Guru was executed for his role in planning the attack on Parliament, which resulted in the martyrdom of several security personnel. Tiwari urged the Supreme Court to take note of Abdullah’s remarks, given his previous role as Chief Minister and his apparent disregard for national and judicial authority.

Overall, the BJP has strongly condemned Omar Abdullah’s statements, framing them as a direct challenge to India’s legal and judicial system and as an affront to national security.
