MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has upheld the death penalty for Sunil Rama Kuchkoravi, who was convicted of murdering his 63-year-old mother in Kolhapur on August 28, 2017. The court confirmed the sentence on Tuesday, dismissing Kuchkoravi’s appeal against his conviction and punishment.
In 2021, the sessions court in Kolhapur had sentenced Kuchkoravi to death by hanging, a decision that required confirmation from the High Court before it could be executed. Now 38 years old, Kuchkoravi, represented by advocate Yug Chaudhry, is expected to appeal the decision in the Supreme Court.
The case, argued by additional public prosecutor Prajakta Shinde, revealed that Kuchkoravi killed his mother after she refused to give him money for alcohol. The trial judge, Mahesh Jadhav, categorized the case as one of the “rarest of rare,” justifying the imposition of the death penalty. The High Court found no errors in the trial court’s ruling.
During the investigation, the police utilized forensic evidence and DNA tests to confirm the identity of the victim’s remains. The prosecution presented testimony from twelve eyewitnesses and emphasized the gruesome nature of the crime, stating that the condition of the body and the murder scene served as compelling evidence of the brutality involved.
The High Court had reserved its judgment on the appeal and the confirmation case on August 8. The ruling was delivered by a division bench consisting of Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Prithviraj Chavan, with a detailed written judgment to be released shortly.
