CBI Arrests Ex-Principal Sandip Ghosh in RG Kar Hospital Case Three Others Detained

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, in connection with alleged financial misconduct. This arrest follows the discovery of a woman’s body, who had been raped and murdered, at the hospital on August 9.

Alongside Ghosh’s arrest, the CBI also detained three others: his security guard, Afsar Ali Khan, and two hospital vendors, Biplav Singha and Sumon Hazra. The arrests occurred shortly after Ghosh’s detainment.

On August 23, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation into alleged financial irregularities from a state Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI. This decision followed a petition by former deputy superintendent Dr. Akhtar Ali, who raised concerns about the corruption at RG Kar Hospital and its possible connection to the murder case.

Dr. Ali had previously complained about widespread corruption at the hospital, including allegations of illegal sales of unclaimed corpses, trafficking of biomedical waste, and fraudulent practices involving medical equipment suppliers. He also alleged that students were coerced into paying large sums to pass exams.

The CBI has now named Sandip Ghosh in an FIR, charging him under Section 120B of the IPC (criminal conspiracy), Section 420 of the IPC (cheating and dishonesty), and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. These charges are non-bailable. The agency has also filed cases against several businesses, including M/s Ma Tara Traders, M/s Eshan Café, and M/s Khama Louha.

Two rounds of polygraph tests have been conducted on Ghosh as part of the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder. This case marks the second significant arrest related to the RG Kar Hospital scandal, following the earlier detention of Kolkata Police civic volunteer Sanjay Roy.
