CBI Arrests RG Kar Ex-Principal and SHO Over Alleged Attempt to Destroy Evidence

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, and a station house officer (SHO) over allegations of attempting to destroy evidence related to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The case had garnered widespread outrage across India, and these arrests highlight the ongoing investigation into an alleged cover-up.

The CBI’s action against Sandip Ghosh comes after accusations that he, along with the SHO who was initially in charge of the investigation, misled authorities and attempted to hide critical evidence, potentially sabotaging the case. This development is linked to the brutal rape and murder of the trainee doctor, whose body was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9.

Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, is the prime suspect in the case. CCTV footage captured him entering and leaving the seminar hall where the crime took place. Roy had visited two brothels in Kolkata’s red-light district, Sonagachi, before returning to the hospital on the night of the incident. He was arrested after the CCTV footage surfaced, and though the CBI conducted a polygraph test on him, it could not proceed with a narco-analysis test due to his refusal to consent.

The CBI took over the case following an order from the Calcutta High Court, amid accusations of a botched investigation by local police. Additionally, the CBI is looking into the role of Anup Dutta, an assistant sub-inspector, whose close association with Sanjay Roy is believed to have allowed Roy free access to sensitive areas like the police barracks and the hospital premises.

The arrests came at a time when doctors protesting in Kolkata sought to live-stream their meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a request that was denied. Banerjee cited the ongoing Supreme Court hearing on the RG Kar Medical College case as the reason for not allowing the live-stream, though she urged the doctors to meet with her.

This case continues to be a focal point of public attention and highlights concerns around police accountability and institutional transparency in sensitive criminal investigations.
