According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area may develop into a cyclonic storm by October 23. This storm is expected to impact Odisha and West Bengal, with Jharkhand also seeing some effects. Heavy rainfall is expected in southeastern Jharkhand on October 24, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Wind speeds may reach up to 50 km/h.
IMD Update on Cyclone ‘Dana’
Manorama Mohanty, Director of IMD Bhubaneswar, informed that rainfall activity will begin on October 23, and a red alert has been issued for the coastal districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak for October 24. Strong winds are expected in these regions on October 24-25. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until October 25.
Cyclone to Cause Destruction on October 23
IMD reported that a cyclonic circulation over the North Andaman Sea and the adjoining Bay of Bengal has led to the formation of a low-pressure area over the central-eastern Bay of Bengal. This is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 23 as it moves northwestwards.
Cyclone May Affect Odisha Coast
The storm is predicted to move northwestwards and may reach the northwest Bay of Bengal near the Odisha and West Bengal coasts by the morning of October 24. IMD has advised fishermen to return to shore by Monday evening.
Red Alert Issued for Heavy Rainfall in Odisha
IMD has forecast light to moderate rain in most areas of Odisha on October 23, with heavy rain in some places. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in some regions on October 24-25. A red alert has been issued for Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, and Jagatsinghpur districts on October 24.
Yellow Alert for Other Areas
A yellow alert has been issued for Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar districts, forecasting heavy rain (7 to 11 cm) in some areas.
Winds of 40-50 km/h Expected
Starting the evening of October 23, winds between 40-50 km/h, with gusts up to 60 km/h, are expected along the Odisha coast and in the central-west Bay of Bengal. The Odisha government has placed district officials on high alert and instructed them to take all necessary precautions, including evacuating people from vulnerable areas.
