Delhi CM Orders Investigation into Mustafabad Building Collapse, 4 Dead, Several Trapped

NEW DELHI, APRIL 19, 2025: A devastating building collapse in northeast Delhi’s Mustafabad has left at least four people dead and several others trapped under the debris. In the wake of this tragedy, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has called for a thorough investigation into the incident, which occurred early Saturday morning.

The building, located in Shakti Vihar, came down around 3 a.m. Authorities have confirmed that 22 people were trapped when the structure collapsed, but 14 survivors were pulled out, though four were declared dead at GTB Hospital. Rescue operations are still ongoing, with an estimated 8-10 people believed to still be buried beneath the rubble.

CM Gupta Responds

In a statement, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed her sorrow, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic building collapse. Orders have been given to investigate this incident, and strict action will be taken against the responsible parties.” She assured the public that relief efforts are being spearheaded by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), and other agencies, all working tirelessly at the site.

Gupta also confirmed that arrangements have been made for the proper treatment of those injured. She extended her condolences to the victims’ families, praying for strength during this difficult time.

BJP’s Response

In response to the incident, BJP MP Khandelwal called for strong action against those responsible, promising that the Delhi government would hold the culprits accountable.

AAP’s Support

AAP leader and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also shared his condolences, urging his party workers to cooperate with the ongoing rescue operations. Leader of Opposition Atishi echoed similar sentiments, calling for support from AAP volunteers in Mustafabad to assist authorities in their efforts.

Rescue Efforts Underway

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has classified this collapse as a “pancake collapse,” a particularly dangerous form of collapse with low chances of survival, although hopes remain that more lives may still be saved. The NDRF is working in full force, and police have been deployed to maintain order at the site.

Government Officials React

Delhi Labour Minister Kapil Mishra visited the site and assured the public that Chief Minister Gupta is directly overseeing the relief efforts. Mishra highlighted that areas like Mustafabad, Seelampur, Jafrabad, and others in Delhi have a significant number of illegal constructions. He revealed that the Municipal Commissioner has been instructed to evacuate any nearby unsafe buildings to prevent further incidents. Mishra vowed that no officer responsible for the building collapse would go unpunished.

An official investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the collapse and whether illegal construction practices played a role.
