New Delhi, August 16, 2024: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union Minister Subramanian Swamy has approached the Delhi High Court, seeking intervention in a long-standing dispute regarding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship.
Swamy’s petition, submitted through advocate Satya Sabharwal, urges the court to direct the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to take a decisive stance on his representation, which seeks the cancellation of Gandhi’s Indian citizenship.
At the heart of the controversy lies a claim that Gandhi allegedly disclosed his British nationality to the UK government, thereby potentially relinquishing his Indian citizenship. Swamy contends that this action violates Article 9 of the Indian Constitution and the Citizenship Act.
The BJP leader has been persistently seeking updates on the status of his complaint, which he claims has been met with silence from the MHA. Swamy’s plea is expected to be heard by the Delhi High Court in the coming week.
This development adds another layer to the ongoing debate surrounding Gandhi’s citizenship, with Swamy insisting that the Congress leader’s alleged dual nationality warrants scrutiny.
The case has sparked interest among political observers, who will be watching the Delhi High Court’s response to Swamy’s petition closely.
