Delhi police chief issues prohibitory orders, cites ‘communal atmosphere’ in city

The Delhi Police Commissioner has announced prohibitory orders for six days, starting from Monday until October 5, due to the prevailing “communal atmosphere” in the city. This decision comes in light of several issues, including the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill and upcoming Assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir.

Reasons for the Orders

The order indicates that the current environment in Delhi is “sensitive from a law and order point of view” due to various issues. There are concerns about multiple organizations planning protests and demonstrations during the first week of October. The Commissioner highlighted factors contributing to this atmosphere, such as:

  • The proposed Waqf Amendment Bill
  • The controversy surrounding the Shahi Idgah in the Sadar Bazaar area
  • The politically charged atmosphere regarding the MCD Standing Committee elections
  • Pending results of the DUSU elections

Security Measures

On October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, the Commissioner noted there would be heavy movement of VIPs and dignitaries in the New Delhi and Central District areas. He emphasized the importance of monitoring the movement of people and vehicles from Delhi borders during the ongoing elections in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana.

The order also points out that areas inhabited by migrants may be particularly vulnerable to disturbances instigated by anti-social elements.

Restrictions Imposed

In line with the order, several activities have been restricted, including:

  • Assembly of five or more persons
  • Carrying firearms, banners, placards, lathis, and spears
  • Holding dharnas in public areas

Violations of these prohibitions will be punishable under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with the police to ensure peace and order during this sensitive period.
