The festive season of Diwali kicks off with Dhanteras, observed on the thirteenth day (Trayodashi) of the Kartik month. On this auspicious day, people worship Lord Dhanvantari, the god of health, along with Lord Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi, inviting health, wealth, and prosperity into their homes. Traditionally, the most favorable time for this puja is during Pradosh Kaal (evening twilight).
Why Dhanteras is Special
Dhanteras is a day to honor Lord Dhanvantari, who is believed to have appeared with a pot of Amrit (elixir of life) on this day. Buying items like gold, silver coins, jewelry, and utensils is considered especially lucky on Dhanteras. Worshipping Lord Dhanvantari is also believed to bring good health and shield against illnesses.
Auspicious Times for Shopping and Puja on Dhanteras 2024
This year, Trayodashi begins on Tuesday, October 29, at 10:32 AM. The most auspicious “Abhijit Muhurat” for shopping is from 11:42 AM to 12:27 PM. Dhanteras puja typically takes place in the evening during Pradosh Kaal, which will last from 6:36 PM to 8:32 PM. This is the ideal time for performing rituals and making purchases.
Evening Rituals to Follow
On Dhanteras, it is customary to light a lamp at the main entrance of the home during Pradosh Kaal, praying to Lord Yama for health and longevity. Chanting the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Dhanvantari Vishnuroopaya Namo Namah” is believed to bring well-being and prosperity for the family.
