On Tuesday, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced India’s commitment to leading the world in the field of 6G technology. Speaking at the inauguration of the India Mobile Congress and the World Telecommunications Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024, Scindia described the country’s telecommunications sector as rapidly advancing and ambitious.

Commitment to Global Leadership

Scindia emphasized that while India followed the global trend in 4G and advanced alongside the world in 5G, the country aims to take the lead in 6G technology. He stated, “This is our belief and commitment.”

Achievements in 5G Implementation

Highlighting the swift rollout of 5G services, Scindia noted that India was among the fastest in the world to launch these services, achieving coverage in 98% of districts and 90% of villages within just 21 months. He remarked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision is not only to adopt 6G technology but also to make India a frontrunner in this domain.

Focus on Future Innovations

Scindia pointed out that the India Mobile Congress and the international 6G seminar will showcase both local and global advancements in 6G technology. He added that recent amendments to the Telecommunications Act of 2023 have been framed to modernize India’s telecommunications infrastructure, highlight high-capacity areas such as satellite communications, and address challenges posed by the digital age, with cybersecurity being a critical focus.

Ambitious Goals for Telecommunications

The minister stressed that the telecommunications sector, akin to other vital areas for development in India, is rapidly evolving and ambitious. He articulated that the goal is to lead globally during India’s journey from the “Amrit Kaal” (the period of prosperity) to the “Shatabdi Kaal” (century of progress).

Annual Event for Telecommunications

The India Mobile Congress (IMC) is an annual event organized by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), aimed at fostering dialogue and showcasing innovations in the telecommunications sector.

With this bold commitment, India aims not only to enhance its telecommunications capabilities but also to assert itself as a leader on the global stage, paving the way for advancements in 6G technology that could transform communication and connectivity in the years to come.
