India’s Richest Woman Savitri Jindal to Contest Haryana Polls as Independent Candidate

HISAR, HARYANA: Savitri Jindal, mother of BJP’s Kurukshetra MP Naveen Jindal and one of India’s wealthiest women, has announced her candidacy for the Haryana Assembly elections as an independent candidate. Jindal, who was seeking a party ticket, filed her nomination from the Hisar constituency on the last day of nominations.

The wife of the late industrialist O.P. Jindal, Savitri Jindal, is running against Haryana Minister and incumbent MLA Kamal Gupta. Forbes India has named her the richest woman in the country this year, with a net worth of USD 29.1 billion.

Polling for Haryana’s 90 Assembly seats is scheduled for October 5, with results expected to be announced on October 8.

After filing her nomination, Savitri Jindal stated, “I am committed to serving Hisar and contributing to its development and transformation. The people of Hisar are like family to me, and my late husband, Om Prakash Jindal, established my bond with this community.”

She added, “The Jindal family has always been dedicated to serving Hisar. I am determined to meet the expectations of the people and uphold their trust.”

When questioned about her decision to contest against the ruling party’s candidate, Kamal Gupta, Jindal responded, “It will not be seen as rebellion. I have only campaigned for my son, Naveen Jindal, in the Lok Sabha elections and have not been a BJP member.”

Savitri Jindal previously served as an MLA from Hisar, representing the constituency twice—first in 2005 as a Congress MLA and again in 2009. She was appointed as a minister in the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government in 2013. Jindal left Congress in March this year, following her son Naveen Jindal’s departure from the party to join the BJP.
