Karnataka Forms Historic 2,500-KM Human Chain to Celebrate ‘International Democracy Day’

In a display of unity and participative governance, Karnataka celebrated ‘International Day of Democracy’ on Sunday by organizing a historic 2,500-km-long human chain. The state government claims this initiative will set a world record as the “longest human chain ever formed,” spanning the entire state from Bidar to Chamarajanagar, covering all 31 districts.

Chief Minister Leads the Way

The large-scale event was organized in collaboration with civil society, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah taking part in the main event held outside Vidhana Soudha, the state’s legislative seat. Flanked by senior ministers and officials, the CM led the gathering by reading the preamble of the Indian Constitution. Participants from various walks of life, including members of the transgender and differently-abled communities, joined hands to symbolize equality, fraternity, and unity.

A Record-Breaking Initiative

The event’s scale has drawn international attention, with a world record verification team from London set to assess the feat. Officials estimate the chain will involve approximately 25 lakh participants, with over 1,000 people per kilometer. Alongside this, 10 lakh saplings are expected to be planted throughout the state, underscoring the government’s environmental commitment.

Widespread Participation Across Districts

Similar events were held across Karnataka’s 31 districts, involving local ministers, public representatives, and senior officials. The human chain reflects the state’s commitment to participative governance and inclusivity, drawing citizens from all sectors of society.

Global Significance

The ‘International Day of Democracy’ has been observed globally since it was proclaimed by the United Nations in 2007. It serves as a day to uphold and promote democratic principles worldwide. Karnataka’s ambitious human chain aims to embody the spirit of democracy, not just in India but on an international scale.
