Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday launched a strong attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of “abject failure” in addressing the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, which has continued unabated since May last year. Kharge described Modi’s inaction as “unforgivable” and questioned why the Prime Minister has not taken decisive steps to end the violence.
The conflict in Manipur has recently escalated, with reports of drones and rockets being used in attacks. Over the past week, the situation deteriorated further, culminating in the death of a former soldier who accidentally crossed a “buffer zone” between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
Kharge criticized both Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their perceived negligence, highlighting that Modi has not visited Manipur in over 16 months despite the ongoing turmoil. He also slammed Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh for his handling of the situation, accusing him of incompetence and demanding his dismissal.
The Congress leader called for the immediate transfer of security operations to the state government and urged a “massive crackdown” on insurgent groups. He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach involving political parties, civil society, and all communities to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur.
Kharge also expressed concerns over the potential misuse of federal agencies investigating the violence and emphasized the importance of expediting the Supreme Court-mandated Commission of Inquiry into the ethnic violence.
