Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has informed a Sealdah court of a potential larger conspiracy behind the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The agency suggests that former college principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondol may have been involved in the alleged plot.
The CBI revealed that Ghosh and Mondol had been in contact after the crime surfaced, with Ghosh reportedly advising Mondol on how to handle the investigation. Both individuals were arrested last week, and on Sunday, the court extended their custody to the CBI until September 17 for further interrogation.
The agency criticized Mondol for taking an “unusually long time” to reach the crime scene. Despite being informed about the crime at 10:03 am, Mondol reportedly arrived at the scene at 11:00 am, despite the location being only a five-minute drive away.
“We have obtained their custody for three days till September 17. They will be questioned together as they played crucial roles in the RG Kar case,” a CBI officer stated.
The victim, a doctor who had been working a grueling 36-hour shift, was found raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of the hospital where she had gone to rest. A civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy has also been arrested in connection with the case.
Dr. Sandip Ghosh is under scrutiny for allegedly delaying the filing of the FIR and attempting to classify the murder as a suicide.
