Mahavir Phogat, the renowned wrestling coach and uncle of Vinesh Phogat, has expressed strong disapproval of her decision to enter politics. Speaking to India Today, Mahavir criticized Vinesh for choosing to contest the Haryana elections instead of focusing on her goal of winning an Olympic gold medal in 2028. He believes Vinesh should have aimed for another Olympic appearance before retiring from wrestling and is particularly against her affiliation with the Congress party.
Mahavir stated that he wished for Vinesh to participate in one more Olympics and secure a gold medal, emphasizing that politics was not the right path for her at this juncture. He dismissed suggestions that her protests against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh were linked to her political ambitions, clarifying that the protests were personal and unrelated to her political career.
Vinesh recently joined the Congress party and is contesting from the Julana seat in the upcoming Haryana assembly elections. Despite her uncle’s reservations, Vinesh expressed that joining Congress was a step towards advocating for other athletes and addressing their struggles.
