More than 50% of rural households across all states and Union Territories in India now have access to tap water connections, according to official figures. Under the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ scheme, it is anticipated that every rural household will have a tap water connection by the end of the year.
Currently, over half of the rural households in all states and Union Territories have been provided with tap water connections. Notably, 11 states and Union Territories have already achieved 100% coverage. These include Goa, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Haryana, Telangana, Puducherry, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram.
Among the states with the lowest coverage, West Bengal has the least at 52.30%, followed by Rajasthan at 52.91%, Kerala at 53.62%, Jharkhand at 54.26%, and Madhya Pradesh at 64.84%. Out of a total of 19,33,38,234 (19.33 crore) rural households, 16,09,75,396 (16.09 crore) have been provided with tap water connections so far.
Launched in 2019 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti under the Jal Jeevan Mission, the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ scheme aims to provide every rural household with 55 liters of tap water per person daily by 2024.
