
According to an official railway statement, "Train no. 12578 passed Ponneri at 8:27 PM. The crew felt a strong jolt as the train entered the loop line and collided with a stationary goods train. Six coaches, starting from the engine, were derailed. There are no reported casualties, though some passengers have been injured." Medical relief teams and a rescue squad were quickly deployed from Chennai Central, and senior railway officials, including the General Manager of Southern Railway and the Divisional Railway Manager, are en route to assess the situation.
