Patna: In a harrowing incident at a private hospital in Bihar, a nurse narrowly escaped a gang-rape attempt and inflicted severe injury on one of her attackers, who is a doctor and the hospital’s administrator. This violent episode occurred at the RBS Health Care Centre in Gangapur, Samastipur district, late Wednesday night.
The Incident
According to police reports, the nurse was concluding her shift when Dr. Sanjay Kumar, the hospital administrator, along with two accomplices—Sunil Kumar Gupta and Awadhesh Kumar—who were intoxicated, attempted to sexually assault her. The perpetrators had locked the hospital from the inside and disabled the CCTV cameras to carry out their heinous act.
In a desperate bid to protect herself, the nurse used a blade to inflict a severe injury on Dr. Kumar’s genitals, managing to escape and seek help. She hid in a nearby field and contacted the police, leading to a swift response.
Police Action and Recovery
Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Pandey confirmed that the police arrived promptly, ensuring the nurse’s safety and arresting the three men. The police also recovered crucial evidence from the scene, including a half bottle of liquor, the blade used by the nurse, blood-stained clothes, and three cell phones.
“The courage and presence of mind displayed by the survivor are commendable,” Mr. Pandey stated. The arrested individuals will face charges related to the attempted sexual assault, and additional charges under Bihar’s prohibition laws, as the state enforces a ban on alcohol.
Context and Repercussions
This incident comes in the wake of widespread outrage and protests following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata last month. The case has further heightened public sensitivity to issues of sexual violence and the safety of women in medical and educational institutions.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to ensure justice and assess the full extent of the crime. The hospital’s management and staff will also face scrutiny regarding their role and response in this distressing case.
