Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed a Kolkata court on Sunday that Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, might have a role in a larger conspiracy related to the rape-murder case of a 31-year-old doctor found dead on the hospital premises.
Dr. Ghosh, who was previously arrested for financial irregularities, is now facing additional charges related to tampering with evidence. The CBI stated that while he is not directly accused of rape or murder, there may be a connection to a broader conspiracy.
The CBI also arrested Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, on charges of tampering with evidence. The agency revealed that Mondal had communicated with Dr. Ghosh shortly after the doctor’s body was discovered.
The CBI counsel told the court, “We want to confront both of them,” citing evidence of communication between Mondal and Ghosh. “He came to the spot at 11 am, and an FIR was registered only after 11 pm,” the counsel added.
Both Mondal and Ghosh were presented in court and remanded to CBI custody for two days. The case is set for its next hearing on September 17.
The delay in registering the FIR has drawn criticism from the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. The FIR in the doctor’s alleged rape-and-murder case was filed 14 hours after the body was found, leading to questions about the RG Kar administration’s handling of the situation under Ghosh’s leadership.
These arrests mark the CBI’s first significant actions in the case following a month-long investigation. Earlier, the Kolkata Police had arrested civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, who was later transferred to CBI custody after the high court mandated the central agency’s involvement.
