In a major step towards advancing India’s technological landscape, global tech giants Google and Nvidia have announced plans to expand their involvement in India, particularly in the area of artificial intelligence (AI). The announcements came after a roundtable meeting between Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel during Modi’s three-day visit to the United States.
The meeting, part of Modi’s initiative to strengthen ties with US-based companies specializing in AI, quantum computing, and semiconductors, highlighted India’s potential to become a global hub for technological innovation. Both Pichai and Huang praised Modi’s vision for a “Digital India” and his commitment to leveraging AI for the country’s development in sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture.
Google’s Commitment to India
Following the meeting, Sundar Pichai emphasized the importance of AI in transforming India. “The Prime Minister has been clear in his vision, aiming to ensure that AI serves the people of India. He is pushing us to explore ways AI can revolutionize sectors like healthcare and education while ensuring the necessary infrastructure to support this transition,” said Pichai.
Pichai reiterated Google’s commitment to “Make in India” and “Design in India,” emphasizing the Prime Minister’s consistent focus on local AI solutions that address the country’s unique needs. “We look forward to doing more in India, especially in response to the Prime Minister’s challenge to develop AI solutions for India’s future,” he added.
Nvidia’s AI Expansion in India
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also highlighted the tremendous potential for AI adoption in India, pointing to the country’s vast talent pool of computer scientists and startups. “India is home to some of the world’s brightest minds, and AI presents an incredible opportunity for the country,” Huang remarked.
Nvidia is set to increase its involvement in India through partnerships aimed at scaling up AI infrastructure. The company has already partnered with Yotta Data Services, with plans to expand its GPU resources to 32,768 units by 2025 to meet the rising demand for AI applications.
Huang also emphasized Nvidia’s collaboration with Indian academic institutions, noting that every Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) now hosts an Nvidia AI Center of Excellence. “We are training professionals and students to embrace AI’s complexities. This is a pivotal moment for India to leverage AI in ways never imagined before,” Huang added.
Modi’s Vision for AI in India
Both Pichai and Huang acknowledged PM Modi’s deep interest in the transformative power of AI. Huang praised the Prime Minister’s inquisitive nature and engagement with the future of AI, saying, “Every time I meet with him, he is eager to learn more about AI and its implications for India’s future.”
