Two Bank Employees Die as Car Gets Stuck in Waterlogged Underpass in Faridabad

In a incident in Old Faridabad, Haryana, two bank employees lost their lives after their car got stuck in waterlogged conditions under a railway underpass. The police reported on Saturday that the incident occurred late on Friday night. The deceased, Punyashray Sharma (48) and Viraj (26), were returning to their homes in Greater Faridabad from Gurugram when their car became submerged in the water-filled underpass. Both individuals were employees of a private bank. Following the incident, the families of the deceased have accused the authorities of negligence.

Aditya, a colleague of the deceased, shared that Viraj Dwivedi worked as a cashier at a bank in Gurugram’s Sector 31, while Punyashray Sharma was the bank manager and president of the bank union at the same branch. On Friday, September 13, it had rained heavily throughout the day. Due to the rain, Viraj was driving the SUV to drop Punyashray at his home. Around 11:30 PM, Punyashray’s wife called Aditya, expressing concern as her husband’s phone was switched off. When attempts to reach Viraj also failed, his wife began searching for them in Faridabad, while their colleagues searched in Gurugram.

According to officials, the underpass had become waterlogged due to the heavy rainfall on Friday, and warnings had been issued to prevent vehicles from entering the area. However, at around 11:50 PM, the SUV ignored the warnings and entered the underpass, getting trapped in the deep water, which flooded the vehicle. Passersby tried desperately to rescue the two occupants trapped inside the car. After considerable effort, they managed to pull them out, but Viraj had already succumbed to the incident. Sharma was rushed to Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

NIT Faridabad Station In-charge Sameer Singh stated that the families have been informed and the bodies will be handed over to them after the postmortem. According to the police, the tragedy occurred due to the disregard for warnings and caution signs posted near the underpass.
