Debutant Kamran Ghulam’s century helped Pakistan reach 259/5 on the first day of the second Test against England. Ghulam played a patient knock of 118 runs off 224 balls, easing Pakistan’s search for a reliable middle-order batsman at the crucial No. 4 position.
Ghulam became the 13th Pakistani cricketer to score a century on debut and the first Pakistani to achieve this feat against England. Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir (1/66) bowled Ghulam with the second new ball during the final overs of the day. By stumps, Mohammad Rizwan was unbeaten on 37, while Salman Ali Agha, who had scored a century in the first Test, remained not out on 5.
Rizwan had a stroke of luck when England opted not to use DRS on a caught-behind appeal against him. Ghulam’s inclusion came after Babar Azam was dropped for the final two Tests. Ghulam completed his century with his ninth boundary off 192 balls during the final session, hitting Joe Root for a four. Pakistan also lost Saud Shakeel in the last session, dismissed by Brydon Carse. Earlier, Pakistan had a shaky start to their innings.
