ED Accuses Sandip Ghosh’s Wife of Acquiring Properties Without Proper Approval

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has alleged that Dr. Sangeeta Ghosh, wife of former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, acquired two properties without proper authorization from West Bengal government authorities.

In a statement released on September 10, 2024, the ED claimed that during recent searches, they uncovered documents pertaining to multiple properties owned by the Ghosh couple, including houses, flats, and a farmhouse. The searches, conducted on September 6 at seven locations in Kolkata, targeted both Sandip Ghosh and his close relatives.

Sandip Ghosh is currently under investigation by the ED for alleged financial irregularities related to money laundering, following a CBI FIR. This scrutiny intensified after the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9.

According to the ED, Dr. Sangeeta Ghosh’s property acquisitions lacked the required government approvals. “Interestingly, a post facto approval was granted to Dr. Sangeeta Ghosh by Dr. Sandip Ghosh in 2021,” the ED noted. At the time, Sandip Ghosh was serving as the principal of the hospital, and Dr. Sangeeta Ghosh was employed there as an assistant professor.

The ED’s raids uncovered documents related to a flat in Murshidabad, three flats and two houses in Kolkata, as well as a farmhouse. The agency also seized various incriminating documents and digital devices belonging to Sandip Ghosh, based on suspicions that the properties were purchased with proceeds from criminal activities.

A Kolkata court has placed Sandip Ghosh in judicial custody until September 23 in connection with the CBI case. The court also remanded his security personnel, Afsar Ali, and two alleged associates—medical equipment vendor Biplab Singha and pharmacy shop owner Suman Hazara—into judicial custody until the same date.
