Mumbai Man Secures Bail in Rape Case Citing Controversial Live-In Agreement

A Mumbai court recently granted pre-arrest bail to a 46-year-old government employee accused of rape, following the presentation of a contentious “live-in relationship agreement.” The agreement, which was allegedly signed by both parties, stipulated that neither would file sexual harassment claims against the other during their time together. The bail was granted on August 29, 2024.

The woman, aged 29, who works as an elderly caregiver, has accused the man of repeatedly raping her under the false promise of marriage. However, she has also claimed that the signature on the agreement is not hers, raising doubts about its authenticity.

The accused’s lawyer, Sunil Pandey, argues that the case is baseless and that his client is being wrongfully implicated. “This is a case of false accusations. The live-in relationship was consensual, as the agreement clearly shows. The woman willingly signed the document, which outlines mutual consent,” Pandey stated.

The police are now investigating the validity of the agreement as part of their ongoing inquiry. The woman’s allegations have prompted the authorities to scrutinize the relationship further.

Provisions of the Live-In Agreement:

  • The agreement specified that the couple would cohabit from August 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025.
  • It included a clause that neither party would file any sexual harassment claims against the other during this period.
  • The woman was to live with the man at his residence, but could leave with one month’s notice if his behavior became unacceptable.
  • The woman’s relatives were prohibited from visiting her during this time.
  • The agreement also stipulated that the woman should not cause any psychological or emotional distress to the man.
  • The man would not be held responsible if the woman became pregnant during the agreement period.
  • If the man experienced significant mental trauma due to the woman’s actions, she would be held accountable.

The case has drawn attention due to the unusual nature of the agreement and the serious allegations involved. The investigation continues as the police verify the details of the agreement and the circumstances surrounding the case.
