Northeast Students’ Body Urges PM Narendra Modi to Visit Restive Manipur

Guwahati: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), the leading student body in the region, has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence and visit Manipur to address the ongoing crisis.

In a memorandum submitted to PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, NESO emphasized the urgent need for direct intervention to stabilize the situation in Manipur, which has seen a recent escalation in violence. The organization expressed readiness to support any constructive efforts aimed at resolving the crisis and ensuring a secure future for the state.

NESO Chairman Samuel Jyrwa and Secretary General Mutsikhoyo Yhobu highlighted the lack of decisive leadership and timely action, which they believe has allowed the conflict to worsen. They urged the Prime Minister to personally visit Manipur to understand the ground situation and provide necessary security to civilians, particularly women and children who are most vulnerable.

“The people of Manipur need to see their suffering acknowledged and concrete actions taken to address the conflict,” the memorandum stated.

Despite repeated appeals for intervention, NESO has criticized the government’s response as inadequate. “The continued silence of the Prime Minister, who has yet to visit Manipur since the violence began, has exacerbated the crisis. The absence of strong, timely leadership has allowed the situation to deteriorate further,” the statement read.

NESO also condemned the recent escalation of violence, including reports of drone and missile strikes, which they argue have intensified the conflict and deepened community divisions, making peace even harder to achieve.

In addition to calling for the Prime Minister’s visit, NESO has proposed the formation of a high-level peace committee with representatives from all communities to facilitate a durable resolution.

“We believe that violence cannot resolve conflicts. We urge all communities and stakeholders to engage in dialogue and work collaboratively towards peace,” NESO asserted.

The organization, which represents eight student bodies from Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura, warned that the ongoing conflict undermines not only Manipur’s stability but also the broader peace and security of the Northeast region.

“NESO calls on the Government of India to take immediate and concrete steps to restore peace in Manipur,” the memorandum concluded.

The member organizations of NESO include the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), and Tripura Students’ Federation (TSF).
