The Sealdah Court in Kolkata has strongly criticized the CBI for delays in the investigation of the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Sanjay Roy, the prime accused, has been at the center of the case.
On Friday, Judge Pamela Gupta expressed her frustration when the CBI’s investigating officer and the public prosecutor (PP) failed to appear on time. As the hearing was delayed, Judge Gupta raised a stern question, asking whether she should grant bail to the accused, Sanjay Roy, due to the CBI’s delays. She asked, “Where are the PP and IO? Should I grant bail?”
CBI Delays in Investigation
CBI lawyer Deepak Poria arrived late and briefly opposed Roy’s bail, arguing that his release could interfere with the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), embroiled in political blame games with the BJP over this sensitive Kolkata rape-murder case, questioned the authorities’ delays.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10 and remains in judicial custody until September 20. During the hearing, Roy’s defense lawyer, Kavita Sarkar, sought bail, arguing that the CBI had not provided enough evidence against him. TMC MP Saket Gokhale criticized the CBI for its inaction and accused the agency of trying to secure bail for the accused.
TMC’s Reaction
Saket Gokhale took to social media, stating, “The CBI wants to release the accused monster on bail. The CBI, BJP, and Modi government are trying to bury this case. How can the CBI grant bail to him? Is there a hidden agenda? Why was the CBI absent from court today?”
This case, involving the tragic death of a trainee doctor last month, has sparked outrage across the country. The Supreme Court is set to hear the case on September 9, focusing on the West Bengal government’s lack of cooperation and delays in the investigation.
