The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G), is facing intense protests following the tragic discovery of a 21-year-old student found dead in his hostel room. This incident marks the fourth student death at the institution this year, raising concerns about the adequacy of mental health support on campus.
The student, originally from Uttar Pradesh, was found unresponsive in his hostel room. His body has been sent for a postmortem examination at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
In an official statement, IIT Guwahati expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our students. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends during this difficult time,” a spokesperson said.
The institute has urged its student body to make use of its available support systems and emphasized its ongoing commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment. Meanwhile, authorities have confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of death.
This tragic event follows the death of a 24-year-old MTech student, who was also found dead in her hostel room just a month earlier, on August 9.
