Jawhar Sircar, a Trinamool Congress MP, has resigned from his position in the Rajya Sabha, citing dissatisfaction with the West Bengal government’s management of the recent rape and murder case involving a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College Hospital.
In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Sircar expressed concerns about widespread corruption in West Bengal and warned of potential consequences if the state government did not address the situation more effectively. He claimed that “too many mistakes” were being made and that the handling of the case had become overly complex.
Sircar, who had been observing the situation quietly for a month, revealed his frustration at the lack of response from party leadership despite his attempts to address these issues internally. He stressed that the current crisis represented a significant challenge to democratic values in the state.
“The people of West Bengal are struggling to accept the level of corruption that has taken hold,” Sircar remarked. He emphasized that his resignation was driven by his adherence to his principles rather than a departure from his political beliefs.
He also underscored that the protests surrounding the case should not be perceived as a political maneuver. Instead, he described the movement as a genuine expression of public outrage, despite attempts by some political entities to exploit the situation.
In his letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Sircar criticized the “unchecked overbearing attitude” of certain party members and the lack of action against corrupt officials. He also noted the party’s failure to address these issues effectively.
Sircar’s resignation comes amid ongoing protests across West Bengal and other regions following the discovery of the trainee doctor’s body on August 9. The case has prompted significant scrutiny, with Sanjoy Roy, a Kolkata Police volunteer, being arrested in connection with the incident. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating the case.
The handling of the RG Kar case has drawn criticism from various quarters within the Trinamool Congress, including the removal of party leader Santanu Sen for his critical comments about the state-run hospital and veteran leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray’s questions regarding the police investigation.
