The West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has cancelled the medical registration of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, an official confirmed on Thursday. Ghosh, who is currently in CBI custody, has been removed from the list of Registered Medical Practitioners under the Bengal Medical Act of 1914.
An orthopaedic surgeon, Ghosh is now barred from practicing medicine following the cancellation of his licence. He was arrested on September 2 by the CBI for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the hospital, which surfaced amid ongoing protests over the rape and murder of an on-duty trainee doctor.
Ghosh also faces charges of evidence tampering in the rape-murder case. Aniket Mahato, a leading voice among the protesting junior doctors, hailed the cancellation of Ghosh’s registration as a “victory” for their deceased colleague. “The cancellation should have happened the day he was arrested. We are glad that the WBMC has finally taken this step,” Mahato stated.
