In the aftermath of Mukti Ranjan Pratap Ray’s suicide, the prime suspect in the Mahalakshmi case in Bengaluru, startling details continue to surface. Reports suggest that before taking his own life, Ray had confided the entire incident to his mother. However, in an interview with a local newspaper, his mother denied that her son had informed her about dismembering the woman’s body. The victim’s remains, which were cut into more than 50 pieces, were discovered in a refrigerator at a Bengaluru residence.
According to the Indian Express, Ray’s mother mentioned that he returned home around 10 p.m. on Tuesday night. At that time, he had been on the run since the murder. Mahalakshmi’s dismembered body was found in a fridge on September 21. During the interview, Ray’s mother revealed, “He seemed distressed, so I asked him what was wrong. He admitted that he had made a mistake.”
The 60-year-old woman further explained, “When I pressed him for details, he confessed to murdering a woman in Bengaluru.” According to her, Ray had told her that the victim had taken money and a gold chain from him. He also claimed that the crime had been committed nearly 15 days before.
The Threats Ray Faced Before the Crime
Ray’s mother alleged that he had been detained by the police in Karnataka after a woman had filed a complaint against him, but he was released after paying ₹1,000. She also mentioned that, shortly before the crime, a group of young men had threatened Ray at the woman’s request. She stated, “Following the threats, he went to her house, and a fight broke out between them. My son strangled her in the heat of the moment.”
Ray’s mother added, “When he told me about what he had done, I was shocked. Afterward, he went to sleep. Around 4 a.m., he woke up and said he had to leave because he didn’t want the police investigation to affect the family. He drank some water and left.” According to reports, Ray had also visited his younger brother’s room, where his brother had been studying, before returning home that night.
What Drove Him to Murder?
Police sources have indicated that Ray left behind a three-page suicide note, in which he mentioned being harassed for money and the victim’s relationship with another man. It was also reported that investigators recovered Ray’s diary during the investigation.
Diary Revelations
During the ongoing police investigation, media reports have stated that a diary belonging to Mukti was found. Allegedly, the diary contained details about the motives behind the crime. The police disclosed, “He wrote in his diary that she had physically assaulted him multiple times because he refused to agree to marriage. He was tired of her abuse, so he killed her.” It is believed that the two were in a romantic relationship.
