This wasn’t a typical buyout; instead, it was a ‘reverse acqui-hire’ deal, where Google didn’t fully acquire Shazeer’s company, Character.ai, but rather licensed its technology and rehired key members of its team, including Shazeer.
Why the Huge Price Tag?
Shazeer is no ordinary engineer. He was instrumental in shaping modern AI technology, having co-authored the 2017 paper, “Attention is All You Need,” which laid the foundation for AI models like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. His departure from Google in 2021, following frustrations over the company’s reluctance to launch his chatbot Meena, was a significant loss for the tech giant.
Character.ai, the company Shazeer co-founded with Daniel De Freitas, gained early success, allowing users to engage with AI versions of celebrities and fictional characters. However, financial challenges and diverging user expectations prompted Google to act, offering a large sum to bring Shazeer and his team back under its roof.
