The 14-year-old suspect in the recent Georgia school shooting, which resulted in four fatalities, sent an apologetic text message to his mother just before the incident, according to family sources. The message, which read “I am sorry, mom,” led his mother to urgently contact the school in an attempt to prevent the tragedy.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Charles Polhamus, the grandfather of the accused shooter Colt Gray, revealed that Marcee Gray, Colt’s mother, had been visiting him when she received the distressing message from her son.
Following the text, Marcee Gray made an urgent phone call to Apalachee High School, informing a counselor of an “extreme emergency,” as detailed by a relative. School officials took immediate action in response to this warning, with her sister Annie Brown and a student confirming that efforts were made to avert the disaster.
Despite these efforts, the shooting occurred on September 4. Prior to the incident, an administrator had been searching for the shooter and had checked his classroom, but he was not present at that time.
Colt Gray, a student at Apalachee High School, surrendered to authorities and has been charged with murder as an adult. The shooting also resulted in injuries to at least 30 people.
Both Colt and his father, Colin Gray, are facing murder charges. Authorities have disclosed that Colin Gray had given his son an AR-15-style assault rifle, which was used in the shooting, as a Christmas present.
The shooting has drawn condemnation from high-profile figures, including US President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Donald Trump.
