Mamata Banerjee announced a ₹2 lakh compensation for the families of 29 people who died due to a disruption in healthcare services during the ongoing strike by junior doctors in the state

On September 13, 2024, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a ₹2 lakh compensation for the families of 29 people who died due to a disruption in healthcare services during the ongoing strike by junior doctors in the state. The announcement follows the tragic deaths which occurred amid the strike that began on August 9, in response to the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

In her statement, Banerjee expressed her sadness over the loss of lives and mentioned the financial relief as a gesture to support the bereaved families. The junior doctors’ strike has been a significant issue in West Bengal, with the medical community demanding justice for the victim and improvements in safety.

Junior doctors have also appealed to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Union Health Minister JP Nadda for intervention in the case, citing an atmosphere of fear and distrust. They have sought assistance to ensure justice for their colleague and to return to their duties without apprehension.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a recent statement, indicated her willingness to resign if necessary to resolve the crisis and ensure the continuation of medical services. She emphasized her commitment to both achieving justice for the victim and addressing the public’s healthcare needs.
